Florida Fireworks Laws

Do You Know Florida Fireworks Laws?

Are you sure you know Florida’s Fireworks Laws? Around this time of year, those fireworks stands start popping up and sell cases of fireworks, so it must be legal. Right?
Your neighbors are shooting off explosives. Almost everyone is doing it, so it must be legal. Right?

Here’s What Florida Fireworks Laws Permit

When you walk into the fireworks store (or stand), you see crates and boxes with cool names like Barely Legal, Lock and Load, and Tropic Thunder. There are specialty kits for a Aerial Avalanche and a Finale Spectacle. Unfortunately for you, Florida Fireworks Laws only permit you to buy items classified as Sparklers. Remember those little sticks you light and sparks fly off, occasionally burning your wrist? As a kid, you’d run around and wave them in circles. That’s still all you’re really allowed to have. You can buy fountains, snakes and glow worms – they’re classified as sparklers. To be fair, you can buy anything they sell. The problems come around when you try to use the fireworks.
Lighting anything larger than a sparkler for the purpose of putting on a show without a permit is a misdemeanor in Florida. You may face up to a $1,000 fine and a year in jail.
The fireworks store may ask you to sign a waiver if you buy anything above a sparkler. That waiver isn’t for your benefit and doesn’t give you a permit to use the fireworks. If you take the time to read it, you’ll see it exists only to protect the fireworks vendor by declaring that you only intend to use the fireworks for a legal reason. If you go ahead and use them for an illegal reason, you’re on your own.

Recycling Day Change

Oakland Town News

Town to shift Friday recycling collection to Wednesday in August

To provide more efficient collection services, the Oakland Town Commission approved a request to shift recycling pick-ups from Friday to Wednesday. The change, requested by hauler Waste Management, which recently acquired the Town’s contractor Advanced Disposal, intends to provide increased resources, more efficient route completion, and address concerns of the comingling of materials.

“The Town is committed to ensuring that residents receive the best service at the most affordable rates and this small shift will provide the needed resources for more reliable recycling collection,” said Public Works Director Mike Parker.

The start date for the change to Wednesday recycling will be Aug. 4. Collection days for garbage and yard waste will not change. Residents will be receiving a postcard from Waste Management with additional information in the coming weeks.

To “Recycle Right,” be sure to follow these guidelines when placing materials in your Town-issued recycle bins.

  • Newspapers, pasteboard, paper bags, magazines and junk mail should be placed in recycle bin.
Flattened cardboard may be placed next to the bin and should be no larger than 3 feet by 3 feet.
  • Recycle aluminum and tin cans, glass bottles, drink boxes and milk/juice cartons, empty aerosol cans, plastic containers marked with a #1 or #2, and plastic bottles marked with a #3 or #7
  • Put excess recyclables into brown paper bags or cardboard boxes no larger than the size of your recycling bin.
  • Excess newspapers and magazines may be stacked and tied with string.
  • Do not use plastic bags for recycling.
  • Do not mix recycling with yard waste.

For more information on what is recyclable at home, common contaminants, recycling myths and more, visit www.wm.com/recycleright. Residents are also encouraged to complete the Solid Waste Service Request Form on the Town’s website at Oakland FL if a collection is missed.
